Fahrenheit 451

Guy Montag is the main character in Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451. The novel is written in the 24th century about life in a futuristic town. In this world, individualism is not accepted and to be an intellectual is illegal. Guy Montag is a fireman and is known as a flamethrower. His job involves burning books. People are not allowed to read books as they are perceived as evil a reminder of the past. The people in this futuristic town live in the present through television. Montag secretly hides books because he knows that the society he is living in lack any form of intellectualism. The children do not learn any form of social sciences in school. The few people who read are considered dangerous to society.

If I was Guy Montag, I would save the following five books; Animal Farm by George Orwell, Macbeth by works of William Shakespeare, To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and The Book of Psalms in the Bible. Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel on equality where all animals are free from the tyranny of their human master.  The novel will teach future civilizations that everyone is equal and justice must prevail for everyone. Macbeth by William Shakespeare is a tragedy about power, greed, deceit and murder. All the books by Shakespeare bring up different ideas and points of view of life. To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee explores racism and civil rights. Different races should learn to live together as one and there should be no discrimination based on the color of one’s skin. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is the story of George and Lennie and portrays what it means to be human. Lennie is handicapped and makes George’s dream of owning a ranch true despite all the obstacles they endure. It is important to be ambitious and to have dreams not matter what obstacles come in the way. The novel shows what it means to have dignity and to make sacrifices in order to achieve ones dreams. Psalms is a book in the Old Testament of the Bible. It is a collection of prayers, hymns and poems expressed by the Jews.

Out of the five books mentioned, I would memorize the Book of Psalms because the different chapters relate to different situations that human’s experience. The Book of Psalms is an inspiration that touches different human feelings. Psalms can be read in times of sorrow, joy and gives hope in any situation. I would become the Book of Psalms as it is valuable in every sense of the word. Reading books puts the readers in a different world. In the future civilians will not understand what happened in the past. By reading these books and understanding the different characters, the stories and ideas, the civilians will have a deeper insight into the future based on the past. Reading books helps people to ask questions about life and brings out emotions. It helps people to live in someone else’s life. It enhances comprehension, writing, communication and analytical skills. Television and movies destroy the value of literature experienced in Fahrenheit 451. Guy Montag understood the value of books and tried to save them even though his job was to burn them.
